I will do almost anything to avoid failure. I just don’t like to fail. I’m guessing you feel the same. Who starts out saying “I’m going to do this thing in hopes that I fail”? No one. How far are you willing to go to avoid failure? Often times, in the effort to avoid failure, we are embracing it (failure). Hmmm? “I don’t like that idea” you say.
Girlfriend, sometimes the truth is ugly.
Ugly Truth: In an effort to avoid failure, we embrace it.
But I say, as ugly as the truth may be, it’s worth staring it straight in the face if it sets us free.
Let me explain my bold claim. I’ll use New Year’s Resolutions as an example because we are all very familiar with this concept. One time, once a year we make a commitment “to do” or “not to do” something. With that commitment, your goal is normally to form a habit around that one act and continue it until you’ve reached your goal. Statistically speaking, most fail at this attempt. And because we don’t like to fail, many have decided to avoid making a New Year’s Resolution. Congratulations! You have just avoided failure and that is good, right?
Perhaps not. If we avoid trying, we are left with the same result as if we’d failed. So have we really avoided failure or have we lost something even more valuable in the attempt to avoid it?
“I’ve come to believe that all my past failure and frustration were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy.” Tony Robbins
It is in our failures that we learn to succeed.
“I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 that won’t work.” Thomas Edison
Although the failure rate is high for New Year’s Resolutions, that doesn’t mean we should give up resolving (committing) to something that will make our life better. We just don’t know how to go about it the right way.
I want to help you discover the way that works!
